The Photo Adventures Should Begin Shortly

I have finally decided to go and take the plunge – buy a proper camera. A DSLR of course, and the only thing that is uncertain is the choice between the two – a Nikon D40 or Canon EOS 400D.

First of all, talking to people didn’t help. At first it kind of helped, but then it messed everything up so bad that it canceled out the first help it provided. Nikon vs. Canon is a never-ending battle, and since both of these cameras are good choices it comes down to details and nitpicking.

Nikon has got a better kit lens (I’d have to buy one extra if I went with the 400D), better ergonomics and a better menu, and also – supposedly it’s better for flash photography – something important to me since I will be doing lots of that at concerts. On the other hand, Canon, has 10 MP (while Nikon has got only 6) and 9 focusing points versus Nikons poor 3, and – it can autofocus better and do it without autofocusing lenses.

The way things are looking now, I’m gonna go with the Nikon D40 and I certainly hope something won’t change my mind until tomorrow when I am supposed to go and get it.

I can totally see this site becoming a damn photoblog. :)

  1. On the other hand, Canon, has 10 mp (while Nikon has got only 6)

Difference between 10MP and 6MP is irrelevant in this case, completely …
If somebody can see the difference between those two on regular monitor or on regular A4 printouts, I’m going to eat both of these cameras.

On the other hand, 9 focusing points are really helpfull with wild crowds at wild concerts, same goes for wild orgies, but this is something I should kept for myself :P

To make a long story short,
I suggest you should take a Canon!

  4. Can’t help but add more salt to this “wound” of yours. ;)

I bought my used 350D in BMFoto, body only — then took few lenses for 1-day test (they let me do it) and then decided which one to buy. One I picked is fantastic lens but with the experience so far I would not buy the one I took. I would buy the EF 50mm f/1.8 II which is 80€. Then after I learn enough I would go for something more expensive, probably 50mm 1.4 USM + 100mm macro and then something on other end, like 28m or 35mm.

Since I now have 17-55 IS USM, I’m not changing unless a good selling opportunity appears.

My dream: 5D + 100mm macro + 35mm f/1.4L USM. Oh, it hurts to even think about it…

  5. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

@livecrunch – I don’t think he’d be happy getting nagged for advice from a stranger, thanks for the suggestion though. :)

    @me – I wish! :D

@Aleksandar Vacić – I’m getting one from BMFoto as well, they are authorized dealers for Nikon. Also the guy in the Shop said to go with Nikon.

For some reason at first I was definitely going to buy a Canon, just a hunch. In fact I wasn’t even considering anything else. Than D40 was brought to my attention and there is quite a difference in price between the two:

Nikon D40 with kit lens (that suffices me atm) – 420€

Canon 400D is 470€ + 80€ (at least) for a new usable lens

I am aware that both of these cameras are a good choice for me, so basically the price will most likely decide.

  6. Well, according to my experience (mostly field work) I prefer Nikon (the best lenses and very ergonomic cameras…)
What about Nikon D40X? (10 megapixel …) My friend has one and he is very happy user!

  8. Btw I notice you are still in Europe since you mentioned € , I bet you could get that cheaper from US.

I bought Sony CyberShot for my Aunt and sent it to Germany she said 5mp cams over there are 300-400€ and here is about 200-300$ that’s a big difference ! so I bought her Cam and sent it there with small eu-usa converter , works like a charm :)

  9. It is definitely cheaper to get it from US, I believe you can find it for $430 (I did, I’m guessing you can find an even better price), but the thing is I have no one that can get it here for me. It’s a bad idea to send things like this by post because it is 99.9% certain that it will never arrive.

Man I can’t wait for Monday for it to come and play with it.
